Getting to Know your School Board!
Celebrating the people who serve on school boards all over Minnesota this coming week, we thought it would be nice to share a couple of insights to our School Board members who have recently joined the Menahga Public Schools team. In an email interview, they responded to our questions.

Introducing Helen Lehto

1. Being a part of the school board is a huge commitment - what was the deciding factor for you making that decision?

There were several openings that appeared not to be generating much interest, so I decided that I would be willing to contribute to the community by serving on the school board.

2. What do you think your biggest contribution will be or hope to be for the students of Menahga?

I hope  to ensure that the students are learning in a healthy environment, and that their education is based on the type skills that will help them succeed in life after they graduate.

3. What's the ideal school for today's kids?

A school with no masks.

4. What's a fun fact about you that people don't know?

I grew up on a dairy farm, where I drove tractors, threw bales, milked cows and learned how to ride an unicycle.

Introducing Cherie Peterson

1. Being a part of the school board is a huge commitment - what was the deciding factor for you making that decision?
I have 7 children in the district. Serving on the school board is one way to be involved in their education.

2. What do you think your biggest contribution will be or hope to be for the students of Menahga?
I hope to keep an open mind when making decisions.

3. What's the ideal school for today's kids?
My picture of an ideal school for Menahga is close to how it has been. A place where students can succeed with all the benefits of a rural school.

4. What's a fun fact about you that people don't know?

Chick-fil-A is my favorite fast-food restaurant.

Introducing Andrea Haverinen, Board Chair

Being a part of the school board is a huge commitment - what was the deciding factor for you making that decision?

I chose to become an active participant in our representative democracy by running for school board. I was curious about the school district (being an implant to the Menahga area) and wanted to learn more about our local education system.

2. What do you think your biggest contribution will be or hope to be for the students of Menahga?

I hope that my tenure on the Board has helped to create a strong, financially stable district, and a renewed hope for educating our community's children. I believe that as a group of individuals, our differences complement each other, and we can create a stronger community than each of us alone.

3. What's the ideal school for today's kids?

Each student deserves to be pushed to use their individual talents and abilities to become high functioning contributors to society. They need to dream. I believe that we can create an environment that supports and pushes students beyond what they thought was possible.

4. What's a fun fact about you that people don't know
I have an international minor in German. I loved learning the language, and had an opportunity to study language and architecture in Stuttgart during one summer college semester. Mein Deutsch ist jetzt nicht sehr gut.
